Dept Reorg

Overview

The Department of Chemistry is implementing a five-year reorganization plan designed to:

    • increase capacity to serve a growing number of students
    • nurture exceptionally innovative research collaboration
    • enhance outreach programming that engages the larger community and attracts new sources of support

When complete, this strategically ambitious reorganization will allow the Department of Chemistry to better address the complex challenges that vex a rapidly changing world and position UW–Madison to compete for talent and grant monies with top-flight institutions that have made similar changes.

FAQ's

These FAQ’s will be updated as we progress and learn more about this transition.

Why did we start this process?

The current org chart doesn’t accurately convey how the department functions, so we are acting to correct that issue and make sure that our org chart is in line with our peer departments. We are also working to prepare for Matt Sanders’ future retirement, to make sure the functions associated with his position are handled by the right people, once he leaves.

How will the reorg affect me?

It’s hard to say how each person will be affected, but anyone can offer input through the anonymous suggestion box and by speaking with their supervisor or anyone on the leadership team.

What will the Phase II look like?

The details of Phase II have not yet been decided. It is too early right now, because we are going through the initial phase of a structured leading change program.

How will this project work with the campus TTC project?

The leadership team is working to make sure the TTC project and the department reorganization work well together.

Will there be oversight on the TTC project? Will physics and chemistry be treated similarly?

Yes, this is being rolled out in a comprehensive and consistent way.
