Overview
The Department of Chemistry is implementing a five-year reorganization plan designed to:
-
- increase capacity to serve a growing number of students
- nurture exceptionally innovative research collaboration
- enhance outreach programming that engages the larger community and attracts new sources of support
When complete, this strategically ambitious reorganization will allow the Department of Chemistry to better address the complex challenges that vex a rapidly changing world and position UW–Madison to compete for talent and grant monies with top-flight institutions that have made similar changes.

Why did we start this process?
The organizational chart did not accurately convey how the department functioned, so we are in the process of correcting that issue. We are also working to make sure that our organizational chart is in line with our peer departments. In addition, we are preparing for Matt Sanders’ future retirement, and must make sure the functions associated with his position are handled by the right people, once he leaves.
How will the reorg affect me?
