Department Spotlight: Francisca Jofre

What I like most about my job is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students’ lives.

  • Meet Francisca Jofre!  As the graduate program director for the Department of Chemistry, Francisca’s job focuses on overseeing the academic, administrative, and mentorship aspects of the Ph.D. program to support our graduate students and make sure we follow university guidelines. She works mostly with graduate students and faculty, with much of her time spent meeting with students who are going through some difficult times. Whether it’s academic struggles, personal issues, or professional uncertainties, Francisca helps students find the right resources. “I give advice when I can and sometimes just listen,” Francisca states. “It can be tough knowing that the students who are thriving don’t usually come to chat, but I’m grateful to be in a position where I can make a difference for those who need support the most.”  She enjoys the variety in my role, which she sees as a mix of problem-solving, mentoring, and working with faculty to continually improve the program.  Francisca has been with the department for two and a half years.  Before that, she served as an undergraduate advisor manager for the College of Engineering. Beyond chemistry, her hobbies include hiking, climbing, and quilting. She says she loves the outdoors and enjoys constantly challenging herself, “whether it’s pushing my physical limits or confronting my fears.”
