The people. Hands down. Everyone is supportive. Graduate students, staff, faculty, and everyone in between are simply amazing.

Get to know Desiree Bates. Desiree has been with the Department of Chemistry for 13 years and as our computational chemist helps with all computational chemistry questions for the department. This support can range from answering quick questions to collaboration for publication. Beyond this scientific role, Desiree co-chairs our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee to create more equitable access to higher education. She says, “This department has not only allowed me to pursue that goal but has supported me throughout the process.” Beyond her passions at work, Desiree is an avid knitter and she loves to garden. Her 14-year-old plays hockey and she now considers herself a big hockey fan!
